Clearly wide receiver isn’t the biggest of needs for the Steelers right now. However, seeing as seventh-round picks are all pretty much shots in the dark, it doesn’t hurt to take a shot on an extremely raw receiver with measurable upside.

Javon Wims is still a long ways away from being a dependable option in the NFL. Sure, he showed playmaking abilities at Georgia, often acting as their offense’s main weapon on the outside. However, he has only one year of starting experience and lacks the polish of your typical pro receiver. His route running is a major work in progress, and his pedestrian speed doesn’t help.

Still, as we saw last year, Wims can be a threat in the passing game. Despite Georgia’s dependence on the ground game, he hauled in 38 passes for 631 yards and six touchdowns. That’s not bad production for a player who was focused on basketball coming out of high school.

There’s a belief he could come off the board earlier than this due to his potential. However, I’m a firm believer that he lasts until the final round due to his lack of speed and experience. If he’s still available at the top of the seventh-round, the Steelers should at least consider Wims.
