The Rams made a lot of interesting additions to their roster this offseason, but they also took some tough losses. Most notably, the loss of wide receiver Sammy Watkins could make a major impact.

The Rams traded cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round selection to the Buffalo Bills last offseason in exchange for Watkins and a sixth-round pick. Watkins’ numbers during his only season in LA were less than stellar. He piled up 39 receptions for 593 yards and eight touchdowns. Not great for a guy who was supposed to be a true number one option on the outside.

That being said, Watkins did make more of an impact for the Rams than the stat sheet leads on. He created consistent separation on the outside, finding himself getting open deep often. Opposing defenses had to respect Watkins’ ability to make plays down the field and that allow guys like Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp to do a ton of damage underneath.

On paper, replacing Watkins may not be important, but the Los Angeles Rams know how important he was to their successful offense. If they expect to have as much room to operate in the passing game next season, the Rams must find a receiver who can stretch the field.

Michael Gallup is a big and athletic receiver who shows an impressive overall skill set on the outside. He has legitimate deep speed and big-time ball skills that translate to impressive red zone production.

Simply put, Gallup has an impressive combination of size, athleticism and speed that should translate to serious production at the next level. He has the skill set to be the field stretcher and red zone threat that Watkins was for the Rams last season. Snagging Gallup with an early fourth-round selection would be a fantastic value pick while also filling a positional need.
