Yogi Berra had some of the weirdest quotes of all-time. He once said this about the game of baseball, “Baseball is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical.” The truth is that the same can be said about football. Most of it is about what goes on between the ears and not below the neck.

Braden Smith is the perfect example of that. He’s a guard who has the strength to open up the holes necessary on the inside for the runner. He’s not a detriment to the team in pass protection, and even though he has limitations athletically, he’s more than capable of being a good interior offensive lineman, and has some experience to slide outside in an emergency.

According to his NFL.com draft profile, he “plays robotic.” That means that he’s thinking too much about his fundamentals rather than letting the game come to him and using his physical attributes to play the game.

If he can just stop thinking too much and just play, he can become the guard the Giants need alongside new offensive tackle Nate Solder. The Giants would then have a formidable offensive line and be more capable of being a Super Bowl contender in the next two seasons.
