Typically you being harsh on rookies is frowned upon. They’re going to have bumps in the road due to being a rookie. However, there’s a huge difference in being a rookie and having a bad debut season and being a rookie and being one of the worst at your position in the league. That’s where the Giants find themselves with Aldrick Rosas.

Rosas was a rookie in 2017, but that doesn’t excuse his terrible play, both as a place kicker and on kickoffs. Among kickers with at least 25 field goal attempts, Rosas was the least accurate (72 percent). Also among kickers with at least 50 kickoffs, he had the fifth lowest touchback percentage and was one of only seven with lower than a 50 percent touchback rate on kickoffs.

Even though he had a down year in 2017, Carlson has made 80.7 percent of his field goals while at Auburn, and 70.2 percent of his kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks. In addition, he has punted too, in the event the Giants need an emergency punter.

The Giants need a more reliable placekicker and a more efficient kicker on kickoffs. Carlson is that guy, and he’d start Week 1 for the Giants.
