Buffalo Bills: Ranking the team’s top 2018 offseason additions
2. AJ McCarron, QB (from Cincinnati Bengals)
It is safe to say that when it comes to NFL playing experience, there’s not a big sample size when it comes to the Buffalo Bills’ latest quarterback addition. But when AJ McCarron got the opportunity to take the field for the Cincinnati Bengals, he proved to be an efficient performer. Depending on what this team does in the NFL draft later this month, the former University of Alabama standout could be club’s starting signal-caller to open the season.
In four years in the Queen City, McCarron made an appearance in 11 regular-season contests and also started for Marvin Lewis’ club in that ill-fated 18-16 AFC Wild Card loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015. In that game, he connected on 23 of his 41 throws for 212 yards and one score with one interception.
MaCarron also started the final three regular-season contests for the Bengals in 2015 after Andy Dalton broke his thumb early in a Week 14 contest. In relief that day and in the following three weeks, he connected on 66.1 percent of his passes for 832 yards and three times as many touchdown passes (6) as picks (2).
With Tyrod Taylor off to the Cleveland Browns and 2017 rookie Nathan Peterman with a lot to learn, the four-year signal-caller from Cincinnati is a strong choice here. While the Bills may still look for a long-term solution at quarterback, McCarron can certainly provide some stability for the offense.
