New York Jets: 7-Round 2018 mock draft in mid-April
If you want a guy who similar trait (with a little less talent) but is not the locker room problem Muhammad Wilkerson was, Andrew Brown is your guy. Brown will never put up the sack totals Wilkerson did in 2013 and 2015. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t fit what the Jets want and/or need from their interior defensive linemen.
The Jets need an interior lineman who can do three things:
- Stop the run
- Take on blocks to open up the rush lanes for the edge rushers
- Occasionally get to the quarterback
Brown is capable of all of those things.
Sacks aren’t everything. While it’s nice to get the opposing quarterback, stopping the run is important, and even if a player isn’t the one who get the sack, he can help create the sack. Brown will open up one-on-one opportunities for the edge rusher to get to the quarterback. That can be just as important as being the one who gets the sack.
Say what you will about sacks. They’re not the be all and end all of defensive stats. As long as Brown can come in and do his job, that’s exactly what the Jets need up front. If he does this, the Jets defense will be successful in 2018.
