The Green Bay Packers now have two project quarterbacks behind Aaron Rodgers. So what’s the backup plan behind the superstar moving forward?

Something that’s been highlighted plenty in the past (including by me) is the Green Bay Packers need for a veteran backup quarterback. Someone that can fill in and lead the offense should something happen to Aaron Rodgers. Instead, they went out and got an even younger quarterback than Brett Hundley — DeShone Kizer.

Now it appears they’ll be heading into the draft with Hundley and Kizer as their depth pieces at quarterback. It’s also starting to be abundantly clear that this is their plan going forward. At this point, it’s getting too close to the draft to speculate heavily on trades. Especially because trading Kizer seems unlikely, and Hundley might not warrant much after falling relatively flat last season.

The two young quarterbacks do clear one thing up though. There’s absolutely zero need to draft anyone at the position this year. Hundley is the elder of the two and he’s just 24. Kizer meanwhile is 22, and has the tools to be a fantastic project quarterback.

There’s no reason to draft a quarterback in the early-middle rounds due to Hundley. At the same time there’s no reason to go late-round project pick on a quarterback with Kizer already on the roster. While it’s not the ideal backup situation, the two seem to be it for the Packers.

If something happens to Rodgers, you’d imagine Hundley will take over. Last season he showed flashes of excellence, but looked utterly lost at other times. Kizer is the same story, except he looked lost more-often-than-not.

Both showed at times that they can carry an offense when on their games. That may lead to some believing there’s a competition between the two, but for the time Hundley is the smart choice. Hundley is much more familiar with the roster and the system. It’s also unlikely he’ll be in Green Bay after 2018. Kizer on the other hand, could be the succession plan to Rodgers.

With that in mind, it would be smart to make absolutely sure that Kizer is ready to take over the offense. Being thrust into a starting role due to an injury isn’t exactly easing someone into it. Except for a few extreme circumstances, expect Hundley to be the primary backup quarterback, and the failsafe should Rodgers get hurt.

The Green Bay Packers have exciting young talent behind Aaron Rodgers. It’s unclear whether either of them are ready to lead a team though. While it seems harsh, throwing Brett Hundley to the wolves is better for the future of the team than DeShone Kizer.
