Miami Dolphins: 6 Running backs to target in 2018 NFL Draft
4. Kerryon Johnson, Auburn
Of all the backs on the list, Kerryon Johnson is an ideal fit for the Miami Dolphins. Gase’s system is built for a guy like Johnson, who has great vision and shows extreme patience before he hits the hole with authority. In fact, according to NFL.com, one scout compared his style of play to Le’Veon Bell of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"“Sometimes he plays with that Le’Veon Bell style where he glides until he sees it and then ‘bang’. I thought he was a really competitive runner this year and he can play on all three downs so he has early value.”"
Johnson is a back whose upright style may not sit well with some, but he’s a lot like Matt Forte with his ability to make it work. He’s a powerful runner who always finishes and looks to fall forward for extra yards. If it’s him and a safety for the first down, he’ll always win. He may not be a home run threat, but he has great acceleration and really good quickness. His violent tenacious style allowed him to dominate Georgia and Alabama, where he gained 271 total yards and averaged 4.3 yards per carry.
3. Rashaad Penny, San Diego State
Penny is the type of back that could do it all for the Dolphins. He uses his 220-pound frame to his advantage as a tough runner who does good work between the tackles. There’s a missing element to the special teams unit in Miami with Jarvis Landry now gone. With Penny, they get another option outside of Jakeem Grant, someone with more power and the necessary explosiveness and experience to be an impactful return man.
Penny would be an excellent change of pace back and work well into the rotation as the thunder to Drake’s lighting. As a runner, despite his large frame, he does have the ability to hit the hole quickly and get skinny. When he feels the need for speed, he’ll bounce the run outside. Penny has the ability to create something out of nothing and should work well early in a committee.
