Round 2: Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State

This isn’t exactly breaking news here, but Jason Witten isn’t the player that he once was for the Cowboys. He’s a legend with the franchise and his contributions throughout his career are almost beyond measure at this point. And while most fans would love to see him retire with the Star on the side of his helmet, his days as a useful offensive piece appeared numbered last season. Thus, they need to think about a contingency plan for life after Witten.

Dallas Goedert out of South Dakota State could be that plan for the Boys. For me, he’s the best tight end in this class both in terms of what he can offer right away and what he could potentially be down the line in this league.

When you look at the career of Witten and why he’s been so successful and integral to the success of the Cowboys offense, a large part of it comes down to his ability to simply be a complete player. He’s exceptionally smart when playing as a receiver, but has long been a great blocker in the running game as well.

Goedert can offer the Cowboys that, but with a bit more athleticism to his game. He’s already a fantastic pass-catcher that can burn defenses on every level with his size and athletic ability. What’s more though, the SDSU product has the size and ability to be a successful run-blocker as well, as long as he can stay focused and be willing to do so. If that’s the biggest issue, though, having him come in and learn behind Witten would be huge for this franchise and allow Goedert to take the torch sooner rather than later.
