Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of this idea. The Raiders already have a starting nose tackle in Justin Ellis, who was re-signed this offseason to a pricey contract. Why spend a first-round pick on another defensive tackle who’s better served playing in Ellis’ role?

Well, because some folks believe he has the talent to play the three-technique. While I’m not in that club, the Raiders very well could be. That’s why I’m not ruling out Da’Ron Payne as a potential option for Oakland at No. 10 overall.

Now I will admit that he’s certainly a tantalizing talent, especially for a team that needs a big boost on the defensive side of the ball. Payne was a monster at times for the Alabama defense, especially during the 2018 NCAA Championship game. He’s big, powerful and possesses more athleticism than a 6-2, 311-pound man should.

What truly makes me believe Gruden could consider him is his work ethic and leadership skills. It’s clear the new ball coach is looking to create a certain culture, especially after the release of Marquette King. Payne fits the bill as a vocal leader who commands respect — and got plenty of it from one of the greatest college football coaches of all time.

Payne may not be the perfect fit considering the Raiders’ needs, but the character and talent are there.
