When you have the issues the Giants had in 2017, it’s easy to miss the special teams issues the team had. Even though kickers are usually looked down upon (due to the nature of the position), they do score points and can affect field position.

Aldrick Rosas was a rookie, and that means they can cut him some slack. However, being a rookie doesn’t excuse him being among the worst kickers in the league at both kickoffs and on field goals. So, the Giants will need to find a replacement, or at least someone to be competition in camp.

Carlson has only missed six field goals of less than 40 yards in his four years at Auburn. He has made 34 field goals of 40 or more yards while in college. When it comes to kickoffs, he has 221 career touchbacks on 315 kickoffs. That’s a touchback percentage of 70.2 percent. He even had 41 career punts as a redshirt freshman, which gives the Giants an emergency punter if needed.

Carlson would be an immediate upgrade from Rosas. His booming leg would give the Giants a chance to score and put the defense in good field position to make stops. If he’s available at No. 139 overall, the Giants can fill this need with him and see Carlson immediate dividends.
