Round 4: Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame

Jason Witten isn’t getting any younger, and the depth of the tight end position of the Dallas Cowboys is a mystery as to whether anyone behind Witten will ever be able to propel themselves to take over for the future Hall of Famer whenever he decides to hang up the cleats.

That leaves the Cowboys in a position to use the 116th overall selection for a tight end, and that player is Durham Smythe of Notre Dame. Having a fourth-round grade for the 2018 NFL Draft, there is a possibility Smythe will still be on the board when this pick rolls around for the Cowboys.

Smythe ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash, had 18 reps in the bench press and a 31-inch vertical jump at the NFL Combine back in February, and his agility and quickness was shown in the 3-Cone Drill with a time of 7.17 seconds.

In four seasons at Notre Dame, Smythe’s numbers weren’t off the charts by any means, with a career total 28 receptions for 381 yards and six touchdowns. In 10 games last season, Smythe collected 15 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown, but did average 16.3 yards per reception.

The Notre Dame tight end also has good size at 6-5 and weighs 257 pounds, plus in a positive for the Cowboys who will be a run-first team, having Smythe would be like adding an extra offensive linemen as a run blocker first, followed by catching the football. Being this is a Day 3 selection, the Cowboys could add a nice piece to their puzzle in giving running back Ezekiel Elliott the best opportunity to get back to his 2016 form, which is where the Cowboys should put all their chips in 2018.
