So, the Giants will never pick as high as they are right now ever, again? Well, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman called that idea ‘hogwash’, and he’s right.

Some have said that the New York Giants “have to” pick a quarterback at No. 2 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. A big reason used to justify this line of thinking is that the franchise will never be in place to select that high again, given their history of success.

Those who say that are correct (in a way). For the Giants, this will only be their fifth time selecting in the top-two in 88 drafts. So from a historical standpoint, it’s very rare for them to pick this high.

That said, according to Chris Mortensen, general manager Dave Gettleman called the idea “hogwash,” and he’s 100 percent right on that one.

Should we expect the Giants to ever finish with the second-word or worst record in the NFL ever again? Probably not, because history tells that it’s too infrequent to expect it — although it has happened at lease once every 20-year period starting with 1941 — twice in 1941-60 and once in the 1961-80 and 1981-2000 period. This is the second in the 2001-20 period.

The problem with saying the Giants will never draft that high is discounting one major possibility. Dismissing this idea mean the Giants could never end up with enough draft capital to be able move up to that pick in the near future. So Gettleman is correct. If a general manager is smart enough, and the Giants need a quarterback, he can find a way to move up, if necessary.

So, the idea that they will never again pick at No. 2 is hogwash, as Gettleman put it. The Giants may not finish with the league’s second-worst record anytime soon, but to say something as ludicrous as they must take a quarterback because they’ll “never pick that high again” is insane and discredits the ability of all general managers.
