2018 NFL Mock Draft: Two complete rounds including massive trades
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could have stood pat and added an impact defensive player with the seventh overall pick. However, in this 2018 NFL mock draft, they traded down and picked up some extra draft capital while still landing an impact defender who fills an obvious need.
Derwin James is an absolute freak at the safety position. He has impressive overall speed and elite athleticism that consistently shows up on tape. James is an incredibly versatile player who showed big-time ability as both a deep and in-the-box safety. His range on the back end is incredibly impressive as is his ability to support against the run and defend all different kinds of players in man coverage.
James also played some slot cornerback in college, showing great quickness and natural coverage skills at the position. His ability to defend both the smaller and quicker slot receivers and the big and powerful receivers is incredibly impressive. Similar to Minkah Fitzpatrick, Derwin James is a true jack-of-all-trades at defensive back.
The Buccaneers have many needs on the defensive side of the ball, but the safety position immediately stands out. Adding James to the mix would give them an elite in-the-box safety who has massive upside and fantastic versatility at the next level. Drafting him after trading down and picking up extra capital is only the cherry on top.
