Oakland Raiders: Unlikely ideal draft prospects at No. 10?
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Here’s where it takes an interesting turn. Minkah Fitzpatrick isn’t out of reach like the previous two players. There’s post-combine buzz surrounding safety Derwin James, which boosts his stock. Secondly, it’s rare that you hear the Alabama product described as a boundary defender in the secondary. He’s more of a versatile defensive back who can fill a variety of roles, which may work against him.
The Chuck Bednarik Award winner’s junior year didn’t light up the boxscores. He finished with 60 tackles, eight resulting in a loss, broke up seven passes and picked off just one pass.
Nonetheless, when you look at his film, you’ll see him take on many different responsibilities in the “star” role. He’s in the slot, blitzing, challenging receivers downfield and helping in run support. Sometimes, the jack-of-all-trades label can hurt a prospect, but Fitzpatrick would become the answer to so many question marks in the Raiders defense.
There’s no indication as to when Obi Melifonwu will return to action. In the meantime, Fitzpatrick could match up against tight ends. He could also cement his spot as the primary slot cornerback or safety alongside Karl Joseph.
Fitzpatrick’s familiarity with defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley serves as an added plus in the scenario.
Here’s a bold stance. The Bills trade with the Denver Broncos for the fifth pick, which creates chaos at the top of the draft. The exchange opens the pathway for Fitzpatrick to Oakland.
Prediction: Oakland Raiders draft Fitzpatrick at No. 10
