Pittsburgh Steelers: Final 7-round 2018 mock draft
Now that the concern at safety is quelled, it’s time to turn the Steelers’ attention to the inside linebacker spot. While Malik Jefferson is no home run at the end of the second round, the potential he possesses is well worth the No. 60 overall pick.
With Shazier’s playing future in doubt, Pittsburgh’s defense is left with a huge hole at inside linebacker. One spot is already held down by Vince Williams, who is a quality starter. However, the other options on the roster to step in for Shazier are underwhelming to say the least. And yes, I’m aware Jon Bostic was signed this offseason — he’s far from a sure thing.
So Jefferson gets the call at the end of the second round.
There are some concerns here. An underachiever of sorts at Texas, Jefferson’s production never quite matched his potential. Even with a drool-inducing combination of size, athleticism and speed, his film shows a lack of instincts and awareness. That’s why he’ll likely be available at the end of the second round.
Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler is a former linebackers coach, and knows how to unlock players’ true potential. If he can mold Jefferson into the playmaker he’s capable of being, this pick will pay massive dividends. It’s a gamble, but the potential rewards are worth the risk.
