If not Ward, then maybe Tremaine Edmunds?

So let’s say Ward comes off the board quickly. It wouldn’t be out of the question, especially when you consider how big of an impact a shutdown cornerback can make in today’s pass-happy NFL. Do the Packers continue to stand pat and hope someone they want falls to No. 14?

Maybe not. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein recently suggested (via Packers News) that a late visit with Tremaine Edmunds could be a sign of the Packers’ potential plans. The Virginia Tech linebacker figures to last longer than Ward, which may help make a move up more bearable for Green Bay.

But just how far would they have to go? Well, it depends on a couple of things. If there’s an early run on quarterbacks (likely), we could see Edmunds fall all the way to the early teens. That’s assuming he gets past the Chicago Bears at No. 8 and Oakland Raiders at No. 10, both teams which could use an upgrade at inside linebacker.

If he does, though, I could see the Packers jumping up to No. 11 (Miami Dolphins) to snag Edmunds. He’d be an instant upgrade over Jake Ryan, and would form an intriguing young linebacker duo with Blake Martinez in the middle of the Green Bay defense.

Edmunds is a bit of a longshot, but dreams come true all the time. Maybe April 26 will be Gutekunst’s lucky day?
