Round 5, Pick 142: Kyzir White, S, West Virginia

The Redskins want to continue to add depth to the secondary and with the selection of Kyzir White of West Virginia, Washington gets a talented and experienced safety. White is a player who could go a little higher, but early in the fifth round seems about right for him. With D. J. Swearinger and Montae Nicholson entrenched as starters, White can enter the league as a backup and make his mark on special teams.

A two-year starter at WVU, White is the younger brother of Chicago Bears receiver Kevin White. At 6-2, 218 pounds, White has outstanding size as an in-the-box safety. He can also serve the role of a dime linebacker.

White has the athleticism to cover tight ends, which makes him perfect for today’s NFL. He would be overmatched as a center-field type of safety or if he’s asked to move inside and cover the slot. However, White can be a terrific chess piece for the right defensive coordinator and to get him in round five is good value for the Redskins.  Washington has struggled to cover tight ends for years and White would give them someone who could immediately serve that role if he gets in and learns the defense.
