Round 5, Pick 163: Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech

For the second time in this draft, the Redskins go back and get an experienced starter from Virginia Tech. Much like Teller, Greg Stroman is a player who can bring immediate value to the Redskins. A standout punt returner in college, Stroman immediately becomes Washington’s top option as a punt returner.

Stroman had a good career for the Hokies. He played in 50 career games, making 29 starts. He finished his time in Blacksburg with nine career interceptions and four punt return touchdowns.

At 5-11, 182 pounds, size is the biggest knock on Stroman. He isn’t tiny, but he has a smaller frame. He does an outstanding job of shadowing receivers but sometimes gets outmuscled for the football. If he can spend time in an NFL weight room that should help him. He is fast — he ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash — and plays with good technique. He got better in each of his four seasons at Virginia Tech.

Something to keep an eye on, Washington’s DBs coach, Torrian Gray, coached Stroman for two years at VT and recruited him. Gray is a huge fan of Stroman. This one makes too much sense for the Redskins and he would bring tremendous value this late.
