After all is said and done, the New York Giants will select Bradley Chubb with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Phil Simms, Jeff Hostetler, and Eli Manning are the quarterbacks who’ve won Super Bowls with the New York Giants. The Giants have never won a Super Bowl, because of their quarterbacks. They have always won on the backs of their defense.

Their quarterbacks have been part of spectacular plays that we remember, or had great games in the biggest games, but over the course of an entire season, the defense has been the backbone of the team in the four Super Bowl wins.

General manager Dave Gettleman must know this. He also knows the Giants are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense, and they are shorthanded when it comes to pass rushers. According to Chris Mortensen, he called the idea of “needing” to take a quarterback at No. 2 overall “hogwash,” and he’s right.

There are two ways to win in this league. Either you get the great quarterback and try to win on offense, or you build a dominating defense that gets after the opposing quarterback and forces turnovers. It’s almost impossible to do both.

The Giants can and will do it by defense, and it starts with Bradley Chubb. According to Pro Football Focus Elite, Chubb lead the nation in total quarterback pressures with 55 (10 sacks, 17 quarterback hits, and 28 hurries). In addition to that, he was a top-ten run defender. Additionally, he was a top-five run defender, getting a “stop” on 11 percent of his snaps against the run.

In a 3-4 defense, the edge rusher is the most important player. Chubb sets the edge well in against the pass and the run. They can get offensive pieces to help Manning, but their best choice is to rebuild the defense. Chubb is their only choice there.
