San Francisco 49ers: Final 7-Round 2018 mock draft
Round 4, Pick 128: Dorian O’Daniel, LB, Clemson
He is more of a project than Derwin James, but O’Daniel is a prospect who can serve as the linebacker-safety hybrid the 49ers appear to be keen on adding. Rather than playing down near the line of scrimmage, O’Daniel spent much of his time with Clemson covering in the slot or effectively playing the box safety role and impressed with five pass breakups and two interceptions returned for touchdowns in 2017.
O’Daniel exhibits both play-recognition and speed. He can diagnose plays and close to the football extremely quickly, with his play in purusit aided by superb change-of-direction ability. Possessing the quickness to win inside as a pass rusher, O’Daniel had 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in 2017. He is unlikely to start straight away, but can make an impact in subpackages and on special teams, where he had 48 tackles in college.
Round 5, Pick 143: Dalton Schultz, TE, Stanford
Given the success of George Kittle in his rookie year last season, tight end may not be seen as the most pressing need for the 49ers. But Garrett Celek only has two more seasons left and will be 30 before the 2018 campaign starts. It’s still not clear whether the Niners can make something out of Cole Hikutini, so depth at the position is useful.
Schultz is a superb blocking tight end who can consistently seal defenders off and make blocks at the second level. His athletic upside is limited but at 6-5 and 244 pounds Schultz has the frame to cause defenders problems and has consistently been able to adjust to inaccurate passes.
With Kittle and Celek on the roster, the 49ers would have time to develop Schultz as a pass-catcher while making use of his upside in the blocking game.
