Round 6, Pick 184: Kalen Ballage, RB, Arizona State

Athletes of Ballage’s caliber shouldn’t drop this far, but the concern over whether he is more of an athlete than a football player along with doubts over a lack of production may well see him drop to day three. But if there is one coach who can harness the best from Ballage, it is Shanahan, who should be extremely excited at the thought of working with a 6’1″ and 228-pound back with 4.46 speed.

The 49ers’ offense could use a power back who can punch runs in down near the goal-line. Ballage, who can also make defenders miss and take long runs the distance, offers that but also brings upside as a pass-catcher and in the return game. He is a no-brainer this late in the draft.

Round 7, Pick 223: Kylie Fitts, EDGE, Utah

Consistency, a lack of play strength and durability are all issues for Fitts. However, he has excellent burst off the snap, the quickness to win inside and has shown some evidence of bend, making him worth a shot in the final round.

Round 7, Pick 240: Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa

An ability to separate and a proficiency for making contested catches are both on the list of things Shanahan looks for in a wide receiver. Fountain has shown some potential in each of those areas. He can gain a step on defenders downfield but it is at the catch point where he does his best work, going up and fighting for the ball at its highest point while also showing the body control to adjust in mid air.

He is a project but one definitely worth investing in with the final pick.
