Philadelphia Eagles: Trade up for Saquon Barkley?
By Jeremy Klump
Will the Philadelphia Eagles trade up in the 2018 NFL Draft for Saquon Barkley? No. But they obviously should, if they could.
Before you go out of your way to call me an idiot or tell me this well never happen, I understand that the idea of the Philadelphia Eagles trading up in the 2018 NFL Draft for former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is crazy and will not happen. I also understand that if the Eagles could do this, it is obviously a no-brainer.
However, as crazy as it may seem, it is fun to think about and look at how it could work.
NFL Network’s Good Morning Football show started an uproar with the idea of the Eagles trading up to the No. 3 overall pick with the New York Jets. You can watch the video below if you have no seen it:
I have a better chance of winning the lottery than a trade like this going through, but in all honesty, it actually makes a ton of sense for everyone involved. And it also makes you think a little: What if the Cleveland Browns take a quarterback at No. 1 and then the New York Giants decide to either take a quarterback at No. 2. That leaves the Jets in an odd spot because the quarterback they want could have been taken. They could decide that Nick Foles is who they would want instead, and to be honest, I would not disagree if the top two quarterbacks are gone.
After looking at it like that, you see that the GMFB trade idea is not as crazy as it may seem. Foles just got a $2 million raise, so it makes this even more unlikely, but if the Jets call the Eagles tonight and said they want to give them No. 3 for Foles and No. 32, how could the Eagles say no? Lets go full Madden franchise trade mode here: What if the Jets also asked for running back Jay Ajayi or defensive end Brandon Graham? Or if they also asked for the Eagles 2019 first round pick as well? Would you say no?
In my opinion, Barkley is the best player in the entire draft class. I have already talked about how it would be a mistake if the Eagles took a running back in the first round, but that was not with the idea of Barkley being the running back they select. If they somehow have the chance to move up and get Barkley, they should not even think about it. Even if the price is steep, adding a player like Barkley to the Eagles is something they should not miss out on.
The thought of adding Barkley to Doug Pederson’s offense is football porn for me. He fits the Eagles offense better than any running back and it would obviously put Carson Wentz and Barkley together for the next 5+ years. This combination would be deadly and almost unstoppable.
Sadly, this will never happen. But if the first two picks are quarterbacks tonight, do not act like you will not be thinking, “What if?” Though, Howie Roseman is a magician…so, I mean…ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ON DRAFT DAY! Kidding. Or am I?
