53. Oklahoma. Baker Mayfield. 1. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Quarterback

Grade: B+

The latest in a long line of Browns quarterbacks, Baker Mayfield heads to Cleveland to try to revive one of the worst franchises in the recent memory. It’s a risky move for a team that’s dealt with passers with character concerns, but it should pay off.

Mayfield is a winner, plain and simple. He stepped in as the starter at Oklahoma and turned them into a national title contender. He’s a great athlete, an accurate passer and he knows how to rally his teammates. As long as he can keep himself under control and learn to manage his emotions, his ceiling is very high.

Right now, Tyrod Taylor figures to start the season as the Browns’ starting quarterback. However, he’ll be on a very short leash with Mayfield nipping at his heels. Look for the rookie to come in early and use that excellent arm to put pressure on the veteran.

Overall, I think this is a very strong selection for the Browns. They need to find an answer under center, and Mayfield has the potential to be that answer. As long as he keeps his short temper in check and shrugs off the Johnny Manziel comparisons, he’ll be at least a quality starter in Cleveland.
