Dallas Cowboys: 2018 NFL Draft grades for Day 2 picks
Round 3: Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado State
The Dallas Cowboys waited until the third round to draft a wide receiver to improve upon their depth chart, and they think they’ve found their guy in Colorado State’s Michael Gallup, who in two seasons at Colorado State put up some very impressive numbers which many hope transitions over to the NFL.
The 6-1, 200-pound Gallup played in 26 games for Colorado State the past two seasons, and his final season as a junior at CSU saw him catch 100 passes for 1,418 yards and seven touchdowns. His sophomore season, Gallup had 76 receptions for 1,272 yards and 14 touchdowns. For his two-year career, Gallup totaled 2,705 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns.
NFL.com’s scouting report has Gallup graded at 5.72 with a chance to become an NFL starter, and at the NFL Combine Gallup ran a 4.51 40-yard dash and had a vertical jump of 36.0. NFL.com Draft Analyst Lance Zierlein compares Gallup to Nelson Agholor and says he possesses a good combination of height, weight and speed, while also saying Gallup is “very competitive after the catch.”
That might be the best thing about Gallup is the fact he’s competitive, which is something the Cowboys’ wide receiver depth chart needs because they underproduced last season. Maybe a player like Gallup can not only bring competitive to the opposition on Sundays, but help make the entire wide receiver roster for the Cowboys more competitive as well.
Being that it is a third-round pick, the Cowboys did a nice job with this selection, and taking a receiver in the third round this year isn’t such a bad thing.
The Cowboys still don’t have that top their game-changing wide receiver on their roster as the other main players are Terrance Williams, Allen Hurns and Cole Beasley, but they are talented in their own way. Though the addition of Gallup makes things better, the Cowboys still lack the “playmaker” wide receiver that gives defenses nightmares the night before games.
