New York Jets: 2018 NFL Draft grades for Day 2 picks
The New York Jets were able to address a need in Round 3, but not the one many expected them to. They were able to find a replacement for Muhammad Wilkerson.
Day 1 for the New York Jets was great. Everything fell into place, and they were able to find their franchise quarterback by selecting the best quarterback in the draft — Sam Darnold. When it comes to Day 2, it was a head scratcher, because they need an edge rusher, but they went with an interior defensive linemen.
Let’s be honest, picking Nathan Shepherd out of Division II Fort Hays State wasn’t a terrible pick, especially if he was high on their board. He began his college career in Canada, but had to leave as a result of financial issues, according to Randy Lange of NewYorkJets.com. He proved his love for football by getting a full-time job and saving money to go back to college and go to Fort Hays State.
He originally was a linebacker, and some of the athletic traits from his linebacker days are still there, despite adding 100 pounds. According to Lange, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said:
"“He’s raw as can be, but I’m telling you, I think the league is really intrigued by him and thinks he has a lot of upside.”"
He’s still quick, and self-aware enough to notice and correct the weaknesses he sees in his own game. He’s still a developmental project player. That said, Shepherd showed improved production in college. In his first season at Fort Hays State, he had five tackles for loss and three sacks. While the sacks improved by only one by his senior season, his tackles for loss were up to 12.5.
If the New York Jets can get some value for the edge in the fourth round, this pick will be a good one. Right now, it’s just slightly above average.
