Chicago Bears: Grading every 2018 NFL Draft pick
Grade: B
The Bears knew they needed to find some more edge rushers after bidding farewell to Pernell McPhee and Willie Young this offseason. Although Kylie Fitts is no home run, the potential he possesses as a situational pass rusher is definitely worth a sixth-round pick.
In terms of the physical traits, it’s all there with Fitts. He was a valuable part of the Utah defense throughout his college career, showing burst, power and bend off the edge. The plus athleticism and excellent hand use also intrigued scouts throughout the process. Unfortunately, it almost always came back to one thing.
Fitts spent most of his time at Utah on the sidelines or in the trainer’s room. He always seemed to be hurt, playing in only 23 games during his three-year stay with the Utes. That was an obvious crutch for his production, limiting him to only seven career sacks. Still, if you turn on the tape, there’s plenty to be exciting about.
This pick is all about potential, and Fitts is overflowing with it. Between his high-level athleticism and short-area burst, the possibility is there for him to develop into a pass rusher worth keeping around. That is, if he can stay healthy long enough to impress this Chicago coaching staff.
