Grade: B+

Here it is — the annual developmental linebacker selection from Spielman. He does it every year, and 2018 was no exception.

Now I’ll admit I wasn’t too familiar with Devante Downs when I heard his name called on Saturday. I’d seen him a few times while watching film on fellow Cal Bear James Looney, but hadn’t done any real research on the productive inside linebacker.

So here’s what Rotoworld had to say about Downs:

"One of the more notable Combine snubs, Downs (6’3/245) garnered PFF’s highest pass-rushing grade among Pac 12 inside linebackers last season. He totaled 211 tackles over 39 career appearances for the Bruins including 65 as a senior in 2017. Downs will probably have to settle for special teams work in year one."

Now inside linebacker isn’t a huge concern for the Vikings, who have some solid depth behind their group of sensational starters. Eric Wilson figures to get the majority of the backup snaps, and Kentrell Brothers should also have a role once he returns from suspension.

Still, the athleticism, size and productivity of Downs should earn himself some looks early in Minnesota. Expect him to spend his rookie season on special teams or the practice squad while he develops.
