The Kansas City Chiefs should sign free agent safety Tre Boston. He would be a true gem for the team late in the offseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made many significant additions to their roster this offseason. Most notably, free agent additions Sammy Watkins and Anthony Hitchens should come in and make an immediate impact.

Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs are clearly a team on the rise. However, in order to get Mahomes in the fold, the Chiefs had to give up their 2018 first-round pick, lessening their ability to have an impact rookie class.

The Chiefs were able to find interesting defensive players to add to the mix in the draft, but they were not able to fill all of their holes. Luckily, there are still valuable free agents on the market who could come in and help this team. In particular free agent safety Tre Boston would make a ton of sense for the Kansas City Chiefs.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Boston remaining unsigned is absolutely baffling. He is a rangy and athletic deep safety who shows the ability to make plays on the ball in the deep part of the field. Boston is a fantastic coverage safety who can take away a deep passing attack with his incredible range on the back-end.

Simply put, Boston is a playmaker at the safety position who could come in and make an immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs will get Eric Berry back from injury this season. Berry will undoubtedly jump back in and dominate for the Chiefs at his familiar safety position. However, the team clearly lacks a competent running mate for Berry at the safety position. This is where Boston comes into play.

Berry is at his best when he is able to roam the field and make plays near the box. He certainly has the coverage skills to make an impact on the back-end, but Berry is when he can free range and make plays both against the run and in coverage. Adding Boston to the mix would free up Berry to make plays up from while Boston takes care of the back-end.

When it comes down to it, the Kansas City Chiefs have some decent depth options at safety outside of Berry. Guys like Daniel Sorensen, Eric Murray, Leon McQuay and rookie Armani Watts can make an impact, but none of them are high-quality starting options right now.

Instead of going into the season with a sub-par starting safety next to Berry, I would like to see the Chiefs sign Boston and give them a strong duo at the position. Simply put, he could be the guy to put this defense over the top.
