New York Jets defensive tackle Leonard Williams may face quite a few double teams in 2018, and that’s just the next step in the team’s evolution of success.

The New York Jets finished the 2017 season with a 5-11 record. They did just enough to build a winning mentality while getting enough to move up to get their franchise quarterback.

Now comes the next phase — taking advantage of everything your opponent gives you.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini expects Leonard Williams to see a lot of double teams in 2018:

"Williams will be a marked man, constantly drawing double-teams from opposing offenses. He’s the only impact player in the front seven, making it easier for teams to focus on him."

When it comes to quarterbacks, it’s said that that they shouldn’t force things into coverage, and “just take what the defense gives you.” Well, the Jets should do the same on the defensive side of the ball. For the Jets, it’s not about Williams getting pressure on the quarterback. So, if teams are going to key on Williams, then the Jets should fire back. Be aggressive and blitz more with both edge rushers.

The Jets need to play a pick your poison game with their opponents. In doing so, though, the edge rushers will have to step up their games. Also, rookies Foley Fatukasi and Nathan Shepherd will have to make an impact as well.

New York might start rookie quarterback Sam Darnold from Week 1. If they do that, the defense will have to help him out by giving him good field position to work with. Forcing the quarterback into bad decisions and getting to the quarterback is key.

The secondary will have to step up their game as well. Getting interceptions will force the opponents to make a decision on whether or not to double team Williams. Turnovers and sacks will lead to better field position and better opportunities for the offense.

Ultimately, the key is to remain aggressive. Double teams on Williams won’t hurt this team, only increase the growth rate on both sides of the ball. So while he may see more attention, that’s a good thing, especially as they usher in their franchise quarterback.

So, the Jets should welcome the challenge. 2018 could be the breakout year for this team. Football is the ultimate team game, and now they have the chance to prove what kind of team they are. It’s go time.
