The Dallas Cowboys selected Connor Williams in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft to reinforce the offensive line, but where will he play?

The Dallas Cowboys offensive line took a step backwards last season. Whether it was injury or players out of position, the offensive line did not live up to its normal standards. The Cowboys sought to alleviate the situation last week during the 2018 NFL Draft.

Many fans were hoping to address the wide receiver position given all the drama surrounding Dez Bryant. But, in typical Cowboys fashion, they doubled down on the run game by adding a run blocking machine in University of Texas tackle Connor Williams. The addition of Williams certainly brings more talent to the offensive line. But the question remains, who will play where?

La’el Collins spent two years playing left guard (a position he played for one year in college) for a Cowboys team that boasted now-retired Doug Free at right tackle. Upon his retirement, the Cowboys moved Collins to right tackle, where his run blocking ability could be put to maximum use.

However, his lack of refinement in pass protection made him a liability at times. His lack of ideal arm length (less than 34-inch arms) and athleticism necessary for tackle play have people wondering if he should not be moved back to guard.

Collins has made it clear that he would like to continue at right tackle. His play at right tackle last year was less than spectacular at times, but he held his own well enough toward the end of the season. His run blocking was an asset. It was his pass protection that needed work.

New arrival Connor Williams offers a similar skill set to La’el Collins. His play at left tackle for the University of Texas looked eerily like Collins’ play at right tackle last season.

Before addressing where he should play, some film study is in order.
