The New York Jets are allowing Sam Darnold to decide his own fate as starting quarterback in 2018, and that’s the way it should be.
Last offseason, we were all wonder who the starting quarterback would be for the New York Jets, and head coach Todd Bowles told us that it would be the man who gives us the best chance to win.
Well, it looks like that approach will be taken again this year, and it’s the right way to go.
Jets general manager Mke Maccagnan was on the Rich Eisen Show. According to NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling, here’s what Maccagnan told Eisen about Sam Darnold Starting Week 1.
"“There’s a chance for anything on the table. Nothing’s been sort of set in stone in terms of how we’re going to do this in terms of a firm time frame. But he’s going to have every opportunity and we’ll see how it develops going forward.”"
Some have said that Darnold must sit for part of the year. He “needs to sit and learn,” they say. That’s wrong. However, that doesn’t mean he should definitely start if he’s not ready to do so.
While I believe he will prove to be ready for the challenge, the coaches may not see it that way. It’s all up to Darnold. If he puts the work in during the summer, his talent will show, and ultimately win the job over Christian Hackenberg, Josh McCown, and Teddy Bridgewater.
Rookie minicamp is upon us. It’s the first chance for Darnold to show what he’s learned since being drafted. Organized team activities are in the final two weeks of May and the first Week of June, and mandatory minicamp is June 12-14.

The Jets are going to have a true quarterback competition in camp, and that’s the way it should be. Nothing should be defined now. It’s too early to make that decision. Let the young man decide his fate.
