Blake Bortles has gained the confidence of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now is the time for him to become the leader.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were suppose to sign a free agent quarterback, they did not. Many people were convinced that Jacksonville would draft a quarterback in the first round. Rather, they obtained a backup quarterback via trade and drafted one in the sixth round.

Blake Bortles will be the starting signal caller in 2018. He has earned the job due to his performance last season. However, he still has not earned the respect he deserves because of past seasons.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com expresses his doubt of Bortles:

"This franchise is in a far better place than it’s been in long, long time,..the Jags still have, by far … the worst QB situation in the AFC South..I remain a Blake Bortles skeptic,…"

First of all, Jacksonville was very close to making its first Super Bowl appearance but fell short. Bortles played very well in the playoffs. Honestly, how many teams have defeated New England on the road for the AFC Championship?

After the 2016 season, Bortles was the most criticized of any Jaguars player in recent memory. His play was erratic and with each pass, his demise was proclaimed.

Instead of quitting, Bortles went to California to improve his game. His determination is the difference between the 2016 and 2017 seasons. His fifth year option was picked up by the front office.

The pressure, of being replaced, is now off. His playoff game performances won Tom Coughlin over due to improvement. Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com quotes Coughlin:

"“He’s improving and that’s the whole key,” … Tom Coughlin said. “I mean, some of his best games were in the playoffs. … you want to know how a guy performs in big games …”"

Since Bortles has gained the confidence of the Jaguars front office, it is time for him to become the field general. Finally, he can lead the Jaguars offense confidently without looking over his shoulder. Expect Bortles to take charge and lead the Jaguars to another AFC South title.
