Chicago Bears: 5 Veterans who won’t survive 2018 training camp
OLB Aaron Lynch
I know this one is going to receive a significant amount of flak, and I’m fine with that. As someone who was excited about Aaron Lynch’s potential ahead of the 2014 NFL Draft, I find it hard to believe he’s suddenly going to turn things around in the Windy City.
Seriously, Lynch has the physical tools to be a star in the NFL. He was a top recruit coming out of high school, but struggled in college between stints at Notre Dame and USF. Despite coming into the league as a project, he played well during his first two years with the San Francisco 49ers. Then, weight, injury and commitment problems led to his eventual downfall in the Bay Area.
The Bears probably paid him more than they should have, but it’s understandable considering Lynch’s history with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Even with his former coach in Chicago, it’s not going to be enough for Lynch to overcome his lack of effort and dedication to his craft.
One way or another, Lynch will drop the ball this offseason. Whether he struggles to stay in shape or simply doesn’t give it everything he has during camp, he’ll find himself on the outside looking in when the final roster is set in September.
Cutting Lynch will create $1.25 million in dead cap space. It’s not ideal, but the Bears knew it was a gamble when they signed him.
