The Green Bay Packers took defensive backs with their first two picks in the NFL Draft. Their second pick, Josh Jackson, could have a more immediate impact.

Jaire Alexander has a very bright future in the NFL. That being said, the Green Bay Packers first-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft could be overshadowed on defense by their second-round choice. As with any rookie, Alexander still has some growing to do. Josh Jackson is a little different in that aspect. While there’s still plenty of room for growth, he’s more refined at the moment. That could come into play.

Jackson could’ve been a first-round pick. Not many people will argue that. Had a team pulled the trigger in the first round on Jackson, not a lot of heads would be getting scratched. The 22-year old is a physically gifted cornerback who already has a number of NFL-ready skills.

Due to that, he could have much more versatility in his game. Jackson can be lined up at multiple cornerback positions, and might even get time at safety.

It’s important to note that this isn’t a knock on Alexander. As I’ve mentioned, he has potential to be a superb NFL cornerback. At the moment though, he may be relegated to returning duties.

Jackson on the other hand, was arguably the best cornerback in college football last season. He’s already solid in coverage and press, and has impressive ball-skills. The Packers could experiment with him to find the perfect spot for him, this would mean more playing-time obviously.

The Green Bay Packers secondary was pretty weak last year. Outside of the draft, they didn’t add too much. Tramon Williams is a great veteran leader, but the depth isn’t there. Due to that, Alexander and Jackson could both see significant time on the field.

While Jaire Alexander is relegated to one role though, Josh Jackson could be all over the field. This should lead to more playing-time, and a more significant impact in year one.
