Although the Miami Dolphins’ defense jumped up in the rankings from their 2016 showing, the fact was that the club was inconsistent at best when it came to stopping opponents. The team allowed just 101 points and 11 offensive touchdowns in their six victories. In 10 setbacks, Dolphins’ opponents racked up 292 points and their offensive units reached the end zone 29 times.

Hence, more help for the defense is needed. Do the math and Miami defenders surrendered 40 touchdowns in 16 games, 26 of those through the air. So the club used the 11th overall pick in this year’s draft on a member of the defending national champions.

"“Being in the NFL isn’t the end goal,” explained former University of Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “I want to be a great player in the NFL. A legendary player in the NFL. So I have made it to this point in the journey but there is a whole lot more left to go.”"

In three seasons with the Crimson Tide, the heady defender totaled nine interceptions (4 returned for touchdowns), five sacks and 24 passes defensed in 42 contests. He joins a unit that already includes proven safeties in two-time Pro Bowler Reshad Jones and hard-hitting T.J. McDonald. The versatile performer will find his way to make plays for coordinator Matt Burke’s unit, regardless of where he lines up on the field.
