With Mark Ingram now suspended, the New Orleans Saints could sign a veteran back — but a reunion with Adrian Peterson? Not likely

The New Orleans Saints truly surpassed all expectations last season. From an improved defense and a shifted offensive focus, the team was unstoppable. Arguably, the team improved after trading Adrian Peterson away. A sad but true fact for Peterson fans.

With Mark Ingram now suspended, Peterson has spoken out about the Saints. In talking with ESPN, Peterson was asked about returning to the team.

"Peterson quickly responded, saying: “Of course I would…I’m not tripping over the past, plus it would be a different look.” It’s shocking considering the way Peterson left the team."

Even though Sean Payton is “open” to the idea, a reunion with Peterson would never work. The main issue, at least during games, was Peterson’s lack of respect for Payton and his decision-making. As evidenced by Peterson glaring at him, it’s a huge red flag even though Payton played it off.

His lack of respect for Payton is one thing, but his lack of respect for the team was evident. In post-game interviews, Peterson would talk about his lack of carries, thus blaming the team. It was not only unprofessional, but completely uncalled for.

The other red flag for Peterson is his age. At age 33, he’s not the young back or the workhorse the team needs. That’s why he didn’t fit into the Saints mold last season and why he won’t now. Right now, Kamara is the workhorse with Ingram out and Peterson would be a big-name backup.

Currently, the Saints look to be staying with who they have. They have Kamara who is lightning in a bottle. Maybe more appropriate, he has Flash-like speed, is a triple-threat and has changed the Saints offensive scheme entirely. Behind Kamara, the Saints have Boston Scott.

Scott is interesting as he’s a great juxtaposition to Kamara and Ingram. He’s only 5-7, 203 pounds, making him a small but mighty back. He’s definitely teetering on the edge of making the roster but he has a chance. He could be a suitable backup for four games, though.

If the Saints do look at signing a veteran, they’ll likely pass on Peterson. As much as Peterson might want them back, the Saints don’t. They’ve moved on and it’s time Peterson does too.
