The best days may be behind Clay Matthews, but that doesn’t mean the pass rusher is useless for the Green Bay Packers though. How can he still contribute?

Just a few short years ago, Clay Matthews was one of the elite linebackers in football. He was fantastic in the pass rush, while being solid in coverage and against the run. Fast forward to today though, and Matthews is no longer considered elite. In fact, some fans of the Green Bay Packers don’t want him on the roster anymore. A big part of that had to do with the money owed to the 32-year old, but still.

While he may not be the same superstar he once was, Matthews can still contribute in plenty of ways. The Packers will be a better team with him on the field, and there’s quite a few reasons for that.

First is that knowledge. Matthews simply understands football. He’s great to have on the field, directing traffic and recognizing offenses.

Then there’s his numbers. While Matthews probably won’t hit 13.5 sacks ever again, he’s no slouch. Last season saw him rack up 7.5 sacks in 14 games. He can still not only get to the quarterback, but bring him down as well.

Finally, there’s veteran leadership. This might be the biggest contribution he can make. Matthews knows what it takes to win, and can be a voice in the locker room. The Packers linebacker position is getting an overhaul with names like Blake Martinez.

Martinez is already one of the better linebackers in football, but he’s still growing. Due to that, you can’t expect him to do much teaching of his own. Insert Matthews. The veteran has 10 years of NFL-service under his belt. After him, the next closest linebacker is Nick Perry with seven. Then after him is Jake Ryan with four.

This is a very inexperienced position for Green Bay. Some leadership and experience can go a long way.

The Green Bay Packers seem to be moving in a new direction at linebacker. It’s not time to part ways with Clay Matthews just yet though. He can impart wisdom on the new crop of stars, while still bringing intensity and talent on the field. Take advantage of his unique talents while you still can.
