5. Jonathan Stewart, RB (from Carolina Panthers)

Run has actually become a four-letter word for the New York Giants in recent seasons.

Back in 2008, the Carolina Panthers used the 13th overall pick on University of Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart. He spent 10 seasons with the club and dealt with his share of injuries. But he would run for 7,318 yards and 51 touchdowns and now stands as the franchise’s all-time rushing leader.

This offseason, the Panthers opted to cut ties with the 31-year old performer. General manager Dave Gettleman, obviously familiar with Stewart’s work during both men’s days in Carolina, opted to bring the veteran running back to East Rutherford.

You will recall that for a number of years that Stewart and fellow first-round pick DeAngelo Williams (2006) made up one of the top running back tandems to ever play in the league. It was in 2009 that the duo each topped 1,000-plus yards rushing in the same season. So while we will be getting to the new star attraction when it comes to the New York Giants backfield fix that a little later, Stewart does provide veteran insurance to a ground attack that has been less than stellar in recent years.

The 10-year pro comes off a 2017 season in which he ran for 680 yards and six touchdowns on just 198 carries in 15 games. He’ll take a back seat to the rookie from Penn State. But he’s also a nice option to have and can be a mentor to the team’s young running backs.
