Once a big-time strength of this team, the ground attack of the New York Jets has deteriorated steadily the last few seasons. In 2014, only two teams in the NFL gained more yards on the ground than the Green and White. The team slipped to 10th in that department one year later. In ’16, the Jets were 12th in the league in rushing yards per game. And this past season, Todd Bowles’ club was a disappointing 19th in the NFL after averaging 106.4 yards per contest on the ground.

This was a running attack that was inconsistent as best this past year. The team ran for 150 or more yards in four games and was held below the century mark eight times. The club’s leading rusher was unsung Bilal Powell, who totaled 772 yards and five scores on 178 carries. The steady performer averaged a solid 4.3 yards per attempt and also added 23 catches for 170 yards. Meanwhile, after a pair of seasons with the club, veteran Matt Forte opted for retirement.

This offseason, the Jets added a pair of proven running backs in Isaiah Crowell (Cleveland Browns) and Thomas Rawls (Seattle Seahawks). While the latter has battled injuries in recent years, Crowell led the Browns in rushing in each of the last three seasons with the club. He played in all 64 games with Cleveland the past four years and totaled 3,888 yards from scrimmage and 22 touchdowns during his tenure. All told, Crowell and Powell will make for a solid 1-2 combination in the New York backfield.
