The Pittsburgh Steelers took a blast from the past and paid tribute to the 1978 Super Bowl team with their newly revealed throwback uniforms.

Much of the Pittsburgh Steelers identity and success of the franchise can be pinpointed to their dynasty from the seventies, a decade in which the Steelers won four championships within a six-year period with a team that featured nine Hall of Fame players. W

hile the Steelers have managed to preserve the winning ways of the past, they also have (for the most part) kept the same uniforms from years past.

After waving good-bye to the hit or miss “bumble bee” jerseys, Pittsburgh needed a new alternate uniform after the league announced the color rush uniforms would not be back for the 2018 season. Despite the popularity of the black-on-black color-rush uniforms, the Steelers announced via social media the new throwback uniforms that have a very similar look and feel to life-long fans.

The newly designated uniforms pay tribute to the 1978 Super Bowl team, with a few main differences to note. The most obvious difference is the numbers, with the block numbers making a bigger mark on the uniform as opposed to the slim numeral font. The block numbers make their first debut since the 1996 season.

Another notable difference includes the removal of the Steelers logo from the left chest, leaving a clean black front on the jersey. The addition of the logo on the chest was another change made by the organization in 1997 in efforts to become more modern.

Other small changes from the original jerseys include a reflective NFL shield, and the last names on the back appear to be bigger to match the block numbers. It is noteworthy that the team will default to their normal black face masks rather than the grey face masks worn by the 1978 team.  Aside from the minor details, the rest of the helmet/jersey/pants will remain the same.

The Steelers will wear the throwback uniforms on October 28th against the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field.
