Arizona Cardinals: Bringing back a fullback is a good move

The Arizona Cardinals are bringing back the fullback position. This will ignite the rushing attack.

Since the beginning of football, there has always been a fullback position in most offenses. The Arizona Cardinals have had some great fullbacks over the years. Larry Centers comes to mind first.

Fullbacks were gradually faded out of the modern passing offenses. The H-back was added as the hybrid fullback and tight end. Now, the fullback is getting reborn to rekindle the running game.

Seems like teams would always employ the fullback position especially since Jim Brown, the greatest running back ever, was a fullback. The Cardinals were guilty of phasing the position out.

New head coach Steve Wilks has brought in Mike McCoy as the offensive coordinator. Kirby Wilson shares McCoy’s offensive philosophy and is the running backs coach. Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports Wilson’s thoughts on fullbacks:

"“What that means is when a good fullback takes the field, the tempo, the physicality picks up,” Wilson said. ” … A fullback brings violence to the game, he brings mayhem, he brings destruction, and those are the things that makes a defense a little bit soft over time, if you got a good one. …”"
