In an extremely classy move, the Chicago Bears have re-signed veteran tight end Zach Miller to a one-year contract.

Zach Miller has always been a fan favorite and a team leader for the Chicago Bears. His career has been mired by injuries, but none worse than the one suffered in October against the New Orleans Saints. Miller suffered a dislocated knee cap and a torn artery; there was immediate concern that he could lose his leg. However, after nine surgeries and tons of rehab, Miller is walking around and seems to be improving with each passing day.

His football future, however, is in much doubt. At 33 years of age, his best football is probably behind him and he’ll likely need the miss the entire 2018 season for more rehab. Miller was also a free agent and it seemed like a sure thing that he would not be signed by any team.

That changed, however, after the Chicago Bears re-signed Miller to a one-year, $458,000 contract (the veteran’s minimum). If Miller somehow takes the field in 2018, he’ll be paid $790,000. It’s an extremely classy move by the Bears. This contract doesn’t affect the team’s salary cap situation much, but it’s still $458,000 that the McCaskey’s have to pay.

Miller is a terrific leader in the locker room and is a great veteran presence for an otherwise young team. This move also shows other players on the team that the Bears do truly care about them even when they take the helmet and uniform off.

It’s highly unlikely Miller sees the field this season, as the team will likely place him on injured reserve as the season approaches. However, having him around should serve as a motivation for other players and someone for younger teammates to ask for advice.

It’s been easy to slam a team that has won 14 games in three years and has only one postseason appearance in the past 11 years. However, this is a classy move by the Bears and one that should be applauded by players and fans across the country.
