Carolina Panthers: Top 5 offseason additions, post 2018 NFL Draft
3. D.J. Moore, WR (Maryland)
Once again, the Carolina Panthers spent the offseason tinkering with their wide receiving corps. And given the numbers put up by this department in 2017, it has certainly been understandable. Quarterback Cam Newton comes off a very uneven year and the changes at wideout, as well as the loss of quality tight end Greg Olsen for the majority of the season, certainly didn’t help.
A year ago, then-rookie running back Christian McCaffrey led the club with 80 catches, good for 651 yards and five scores. Wide receiver Devin Funchess was second with 63 grabs and came up with team-highs with 840 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches. And fellow wideout Kelvin Benjamin would finish third on the Panthers with 32 receptions.
Of course, the latter was dealt to the Buffalo Bills in October. But he still finished among the team’s pass-catching leaders. This offseason, Carolina sought some veteran help at wide receiver by trading for big-play performer Torrey Smith — late of the Philadelphia Eagles — and signing Jairus Wright (Minnesota Vikings).
And speaking of former Maryland products like Smith, the Panthers used the 24th overall pick in this year’s draft on former Terrapins’ product D.J. Moore. He really came into his own during his final season in school, totaling 80 catches for 1,033 yards and eight scores. And the still-learning prospect should benefit by the presence of both Funchess and Smith.
