The defense of the Kansas City Chiefs lost Marcus Peters this offseason. While that hurts, cornerback Kendall Fuller makes it much less painful.

It’s hard to make up for losing one of the best young defensive backs in football. For the Kansas City Chiefs in fact, the loss of Marcus Peters (among others) has led to many questioning their secondary. The Chiefs didn’t come out of this offseason empty handed though. They actually got an even younger cornerback than Peters in Kendall Fuller.

Fuller may not be at the same star status as Peters, but he did enjoy a breakout season in 2018 with the Washington Redskins. In his second season in the NFL, Fuller recorded four interceptions and 10 pass deflections. He also forced one fumble and finished the year with 55 tackles. Those numbers shouldn’t be taken lightly.

In fact, Fuller ended the 2017 season with more tackles and more pass deflections than Peters.

The 23-year old took a major leap forward from his rookie year (2016) to his sophomore campaign. This wasn’t completely unexpected though as when the Redskins drafted him the feeling seemed to be that Fuller was raw, but had unlimited potential. That potential started to shine through in 2017 and he could be ready for the next step in 2018.

Fuller didn’t shrink from any challenges last season either. Covering the opponents number one receiver on occasion, the Virginia Tech product never backed down. He looked improved right away in week one, and didn’t stop. There’s very little he can’t do either, as he’s extremely strong in coverage and a solid tackler, as well as having good hands and great speed.

I’m not trying to convince anyone that Kendall Fuller is a better cornerback than Marcus Peters. He is however, quickly climbing up the defensive back ranks. The Kansas City Chiefs could be in much worse situations than one that sees them have the rising star on their roster.
