Austin Seferian-Jenkins will make the Jacksonville Jaguars better by making Blake Bortles better.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released long-time tight end Marcedes Lewis this spring. Since Lewis was gone, many concluded that Jacksonville would draft a tight end in the first round. They signed two free agent tight ends.

Niles Paul was the special teams captain in Washington. He will primarily assume that role for the Jaguars. So what about Austin Seferian-Jenkins and what will be his role?

Seferian-Jenkins is a big target. He stands 6-5, weighing 262 pounds. Most of all, he turns 26 years old this fall. Seferian-Jenkins caught 50 passes for 357 yards with three touchdowns last season for the New York Jets. Also, he had a good game against the Jaguars, last October. He caught all four targeted passes for 46 yards. Which means that he did not drop any pass thrown his way!

Expect Seferian-Jenkins to clear out linebackers for the middle routes. This will enable the wide receivers to run deeper routes in order to stretch the field. He was very effective against New England in week six.

Seferian-Jenkins caught eight passes for 46 yards with a touchdown. His NFL next gen stats chart shows each route he ran and the result. He successfully managed to work each flat on which side where he initially lined up.

ASJ will make Blake Bortles better because of less dropped passes. Bortles’ completion rate will go up considerably. This will definitely aid the confidence of Bortles passing. He will help give Bortles a huge target as a hot receiver on blitzes. Seferian-Jenkins has the ability to run after the catch. He will be able to turn up field to convert on third down situations.

Most of all, Seferian-Jenkins will draw attention from pass defenders. Someone will have to cover him which allows a wide out more space in the secondary. His presence on the field will affect the Jaguars passing attack.

Lewis was targeted 48 times last season. He caught just 24 of them. Seferian-Jenkins will be a better and reliable target. It’s going to be awesome watching the Jaguars offense in 2018.
