Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Foles trade shouldn’t happen in 2018
By Hunter Noll
The Philadelphia Eagles are in an unusual spot as they have two quarterbacks that everyone wants. Don’t trade Nick Foles in 2018 though.
Carson Wentz was one of the favorites to win the MVP award last season, if not the favorite. That is, until a knee injury ended his season in Week 14. This led to Nick Foles being thrust into the starter position for the final three weeks of the regular season.
The results were mixed, as Foles came out firing in Week 15 and had a superb game. Week 16 was about as “meh” as you could get, and Week 17 was a disaster. Once the playoffs arrived though, the quarterback flipped the switch.
Foles completed 72.6 percent of his passes in the postseason. The 29-year old threw for 971 yards and six touchdowns compared to just one interception. Of course, there was that touchdown reception in the Super Bowl as well. Basically, it would be hard to envision a much better playoff run.
Thanks to his postseason performance, Foles quickly became a coveted asset once again. This leaves the Eagles with options. However, Wentz is still recovering from that injury. Due to that, there’s a strong chance he isn’t available for a few weeks at the start of the season. With this in mind, there’s no way Philadelphia trades Foles before Wentz returns.
What about after he returns though? There’s a few easy reasons to point to when arguing why the Eagles should not trade the quarterback at any point this season.
Wentz could return early in the season, but knee injuries can be fickle. He could be out longer than usual, or see the injury flare up during the year. Then there’s the scary thought that the injury could change his production level. While it’s hard to imagine it would create that much of a problem, there’s no way to predict how a player will return from a serious knee injury.
If Wentz drops severely in production or starts to become unreliable health-wise, the Eagles will be extremely happy they stuck with Foles. Keeping Foles for year one after the injury is the right move. Make sure everything is squared away with Wentz before even considering a move.

The Philadelphia Eagles have two quarterbacks on their roster any team would be glad to have. With Carson Wentz set to return early in 2018, it would be understandable if they were tempted by a high offer for Nick Foles. Having arguably the best backup plan in the NFL at quarterback is too good to pass up though. At least for this season, there’s no reason to move the Super Bowl MVP.
