Jacksonville Jaguars: Which training camp competition is most intriguing?
By Larry Brake
The Jacksonville Jaguars might have a boring training camp. Are there any potential competitions that intrigue you?
Since the Jacksonville Jaguars have vastly improved, training camp might be boring. Remember last year’s training camp quarterback competition? Blake Bortles is clearly the starting quarterback due to leading Jacksonville to a near Super Bowl appearance.
For several years, most Jaguars fans wondered how the team would address roster issues. Dave Caldwell is building a talented and deep roster. He has drafted well and signed exceptional free agents.
Currently, the Jaguars starting lineups are basically set. On defense, there is competition to replace Paul Posluzsny. Actually, the competition is for Myles Jack’s old position. As a result, Blair Brown is the frontrunner to win the job. But in reality, the slot corner will play more downs. There are three players vying for the slot corner job.
First, the Jaguars signed D.J. Hayden to compete for the slot corner position. Hayden is beginning his sixth NFL season in 2018. He was the Oakland Raiders first round selection in 2013. Next, Tyler Patmon signed to play, last season, in Jacksonville. Patmon played 45 defensive play snaps last season. He filled in admirable for Aaron Colvin due to injury.
Jalen Myrick is the third guy looking to become the slot corner. He was a seventh round selection in 2017. Myrick saw action against Cincinnati and Houston last year with 23 snap counts.
Expect Hayden to win the job because of his professional experience. Patmon and Myrick will definitely push Hayden but will see more time on special teams. Jacksonville is very deep in the secondary.
The receiving corps is very good. Jacksonville has the ability to line up with four wide outs and each could beat you deep. Opposing secondaries will get worn down because the Jaguars will be able to keep fresh receivers on the field.

Only injuries can derail the Jaguars chances in 2018. The positive side of that is, there is someone to fill in without a huge drop off. Jobs may not be on the line in training camp, but that is a good thing. Especially when your team is very good.
