It sounds like the same thing we’ve heard every offseason of Jason Garrett’s coaching career, but is the Dallas Cowboys head coach really on the hot seat?

There’s nothing you can’t bet on in Vegas. One of the more recent NFL-related pools looks at which NFL head coach could be fired first in 2018 and Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett came in as the ninth-most likely to be canned, according to OddShark.com.

This isn’t shocking for anyone who follows the team. Every year, Garrett is said to be on the hot seat by members of the media and even in Vegas. However, the team itself comes out and writes it off as nonsense.

Usually that’s followed either by a successful season out of nowhere or a pitiful failure when something good is expected. After the good years, team owner Jerry Jones sings his praises and gloats in the ‘I was right’ parade. Then when Garrett fails and the team falls short, he points to the good year and finds excuses to keep his coach.

In eight seasons as the coach in Big D, Garrett has a record of 67 wins and 53 losses. In the post season, he’s just 1-2, which is nothing to brag about obviously.

More from Dallas Cowboys

After going 13-3 in 2016, Garrett won the NFL Coach of the Year Award, and Jones was glowing knowing that his handpicked coach finally got the recognition Jones said he deserved. Then with all eyes on him and his team, they again floundered last season going 9-7 and missing the playoffs.

So again, people are calling for his head just like the Vegas odds are saying. The question becomes whether or not the controversial coach is actually in trouble.

The answer is likely no. Garrett has the backing of his coach and of course people want to say it’s because he’s a puppet for Jones — which is the dumbest argument considering how much of Garrett’s fingerprints are on this team. While that’s an easy thing to say, the real truth is the team believes in his vision and also knows there’s no Bill Belichick or Bill Walsh sitting there begging to coach this franchise.

Jones and his staff believe Garrett gives this team as good a chance to win as any coach in this league. His players believe in him and they know he’s the boss. Until there’s a total meltdown, there will be no change in Dallas.
