New Orleans Saints: Top 5 offseason additions, post 2018 NFL Draft
4. Marcus Davenport, DE (UTSA)
The New Orleans Saints’ defense did come a long way in a short time this past season. But like every other club, Sean Payton’s defending NFC South champions can use as much pass-rushing help as possible. When it comes to coordinator Dennis Allen’s unit, defensive end Cameron Jordan has emerged as one of the better players in the league at his position. He led the club last season with 13 sacks, to go along with 62 tackles (tied for fourth on the club) and a pair of forced fumbles. He also knocked down 11 passes.
The Saints also got a lot from defensive end Alex Okafor, a 2017 offseason addition from the Arizona Cardinals. He totaled 4.5 sacks but was lost in November with an Achilles injury. It will be interesting to see him this summer.
Meanwhile, it is safe to say the organization was extremely high on defensive end Marcus Davenport, the first-ever first-round selection from the University of Texas-San Antonio. They moved up in the first round of the draft to select the intriguing prospect. He finished with 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in his final season with the Roadrunners.
The Saints finished with a respectable 42 sacks this past year. It will be fascinating to see how fact the talented Davenport develops this fall.
